The British Embassy in Rome is looking for an experienced plumber, gas and heating engineer to work as a member of the Technical Works Group (TWG) team. This role involves the high-quality, proactive maintenance of plumbing and heating systems in over 40 residential properties and office premises. It also requires flexibility for cross-team support on key tasks across the TWG, including some electrical work, minor repairs, manual handling and driving/driver tasks.

As part of the Technical Works Group of 5 people, and working closely with the Estates and wider Corporate Services team, the main duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

Plumbing & Heating Maintenance
• Maintain plumbing systems: toilets, flush tanks, water heaters, faucets, shower/bathtub enclosures, clear drains.
• Emergency interventions on gas/electric boilers for hot water and heating.
• Install/replace washing machines and gas cookers; restore gas connections.

Minor Property Repairs
• General property maintenance, repairs and small structural fixes.
• Minor electrical tasks: replace sockets, plugs, lighting.
• Change curtains/blinds.
• Clear manholes and gutters.

Inspections, Compliance & Support Services
• Inspect properties before occupancy/change-over; check plumbing, heating, electrical systems to ensure they meet agreed compliance standards.
• Install fire smoke/heat detectors.
• Explain apartment systems to new occupants.
• Assist external contractors when necessary.

Logistics & Miscellaneous Tasks
• Porterage: move furniture, office equipment, deliver supplies.
• Set up conference rooms and event spaces, including for external events.
• Drive TWG and official vehicles.
• Order and purchase materials.

Some travel within Italy may be required.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Intermediate English (minimum B1/B2 level according to the CEFR*);
  • Fluency in Italian, both spoken and written (minimum C1 level according to the CEFR*);
  • At least 5 years’ proven experience as plumbing, gas and heating engineer with relevant technical certifications;
  • IT literacy, some experience in the use of MS Office 365 environment including MS Teams;
  • Highly-developed customer service skills, with a clear commitment to excellent customer service;
  • Ability to respond flexibly to changing priorities, including some flexible working patterns;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with ability to engage with different stakeholders;
  • Strong team player;
  • Full driving licence with at least 5 years’ experience and willingness to drive as part of job duties.

    This is a full-time, fixed-term position, graded AA according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2,704.19. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including €10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata. 

    Working hours are 40 hours (net) per week Monday to Friday typically from 08.00 – 17.00, with some flexibility. Please note that remote working is extremely limited, due to the nature of the position.

    The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of an four (4) month probationary period.Thestarting datemay be delayed depending on circumstances at the time and this will beagreed with the selected candidate.

    All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions(IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.” 

    The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.
