Are You an Experienced Vet Ready for Remote Field Work? AMRRIC is seeking a skilled small-animal veterinarian with proven remote veterinary experience for a 6-month, field-based role delivering animal health programs across northern Australia.

You’ll work closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and provide senior clinical leadership in remote settings. Expect extensive 4WD travel, light aircraft travel and extended stays in remote communities throughout the dry season.

If you’re an experienced remote vet looking for meaningful, community-led work, this role offers a rare and rewarding opportunity.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead delivery of desexing and animal health clinics in remote communities, including surgery, anaesthesia and preventative care.
  • Provide clinical leadership in the field — mentoring vets, vet nurses and volunteers.
  • Ensure culturally safe, community-led program delivery aligned with local priorities.
  • Travel extensively across northern Australia (including 4WD travel) and participate in multi-day to multi-week remote field trips.
  • Coordinate trip planning, logistics and equipment with AMRRIC’s program team.
  • Maintain high standards of WHS, animal welfare and clinical practice in remote settings.
  • Complete all clinical notes, trip reports and data capture requirements.

What You’ll Bring

  • Current veterinary registration recognised in the NT.
  • Minimum 4-5 years’ experience in clinical practice, with strong surgical skills (flank spey experience highly regarded).
  • Confidence working independently in dynamic, resource-limited field environments.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Experience in, or a strong interest in, remote/outreach/community veterinary work.
  • Certified 4WD training and ability to drive a manual vehicle for remote/off-road conditions.
  • Practical, calm, organised and solutions-focused, with strong teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Able to be based in Darwin for the duration of the contract and travel regularly to remote communities.

You’ll Benefit From

  • Generous travel allowances, all travel, accommodation, meals and field expenses covered in accordance with AMRRIC’s policies.
  • A unique, values-driven role delivering real impact for remote First Nations communities and One Health outcomes.
  • A “dry-season” Darwin lifestyle with frequent travel to extraordinary remote regions.
  • A supportive and multidisciplinary team including experienced operations, community engagement and veterinary professionals.
  • Professional development opportunities in remote medicine, high-volume surgery and community-led animal management.
  • Up to $10,000 rental support for verified relocation to Darwin (reimbursed with approved proof of rental accommodation).
  • Access to not-for-profit salary packaging benefits.
  • Contract: 6-month fixed term (April–September 2026).
  • Classification: Experienced Veterinary Surgeon – Level 3 (Animal Care & Veterinary Services Award).
  • Salary: $90,000 per annum + super + leave loading + travel allowance + rental support
    • Equivalent FTE annual package value: up to $134,900
  • Location requirement: Due to the travel-intensive nature of this role, it must be based in Darwin. Remote or hybrid arrangements are not available for the period of the contract.
