A Managed Wi-Fi Support Engineer plays a crucial role in overseeing and maintaining the performance and reliability of managed Wi-Fi networks, often for a variety of clients in a business or enterprise environment. Heres a detailed job description for this role:


Responsibilities:

  • Network Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Continuously monitor managed Wi-Fi networks to ensure optimal performance and quick resolution of any issues. Use diagnostic tools to troubleshoot network problems and perform root cause analysis on connectivity or performance issues.
  • Client Support: Provide direct support to clients for all Wi-Fi related issues, including configuration, authentication, network access, and consistent performance. Respond to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • System Maintenance: Perform regular updates and maintenance on network hardware (like routers, switches, and access points) and software to ensure security and efficiency. This includes applying patches and upgrading systems as necessary.
  • Installation and Configuration: Assist with the installation and configuration of Wi-Fi hardware and management software. Set up user accounts, permissions, and access controls according to security policies.
  • Performance Optimization: Analyze network traffic, usage patterns, and client feedback to optimize the performance and scalability of Wi-Fi networks. Make recommendations for enhancements and upgrades to improve overall service quality.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation regarding network configurations, processes, and service records. This documentation should be regularly updated and available for audits and compliance checks.
  • Training and Guidance: Provide training and guidance to users on how to utilize network resources effectively. Create user manuals and FAQ resources for client reference.
  • Security Compliance: Ensure all managed Wi-Fi networks comply with relevant laws and regulations regarding data security and privacy. Implement and manage network security tools and protocols, such as firewalls, VPNs, and encryption technologies.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Knowledge of network diagnostic, monitoring, and management tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge in network management and support, specifically with Wi-Fi technologies.
  • Strong understanding of networking protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, DHCP) and a working understanding of Wi-Fi standards (IEEE 802.11).

Certifications (desirable but not essential):

  • Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA)
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate Wireless (CCNA Wireless)
  • CompTIA Network+
